A/C Service — Vernon, BC

Refrigerant Oil Condition Testing (Non-Invasive)

This is a diagnostic capability most shops don't offer: sampling and testing the refrigerant oil on a running A/C system without opening the refrigerant circuit. If your A/C isn't cooling well and you don't know why, an oil condition test tells you definitively whether moisture contamination or compressor deterioration is the issue.

Oil Condition Testing

What the oil tells you

Healthy refrigerant oil is clear to slightly yellow and has no odour. Contaminated oil darkens progressively — from amber to brown to nearly black — and develops an acidic smell. That acidic smell is literal acid: moisture in the system reacts with refrigerant oil under heat and pressure to form organic acids. Those acids attack the aluminum compressor internals. By the time the oil is dark brown, the compressor is already damaged.

No disassembly, no refrigerant release

The test is performed without opening the system. No refrigerant is recovered or released. The system keeps running throughout. This is genuinely non-invasive — and means you get diagnostic information that would otherwise require tearing the system down.

Who benefits from this test?

Any vehicle with mystery A/C problems — poor cooling that could be a refrigerant issue, a moisture contamination issue, or an early compressor failure. Also useful for assessing a used vehicle's A/C before purchase, or verifying that a recently repaired system was properly evacuated.

Common Questions

What does contaminated oil look like?
Healthy oil is clear to pale yellow. Lightly contaminated oil is amber. Heavily contaminated oil is dark brown to black, with a distinctly acidic smell. Even light contamination is a signal that moisture entered the system and proper evacuation is needed.
My A/C was just repaired. Can I get an oil test?
Yes — this is actually one of the best uses of the test. If you had a compressor or other component replaced and want to verify the system was properly evacuated (no moisture left behind), an oil condition test provides confirmation.
